Syncopated Blues

Josh is an accomplished player who likes to wear his favourite influences on his sleeves. In these tracks Josh draws inspiration from some big names such as George Benson, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, Robben Ford, Albert King and Danny Gatton!

Josh says ‘These solo have a real emphasis on playing over a syncopated groove, you’re going to learn how to play over things like a Rhumba, a second line groove and anything that’s got a syncopated beat. I’ve broken it down to show you licks that work over these syncopations, things that work in and out against the time, or with the time. Basically, all the tools you need to play over these types of things.’

In these tracks you’ll be using lots of classic blues playing ideas such as bending, slides, minor pentatonic and blues scales alongside some of Josh’s spicier ideas like chromatics, diminished runs, V-I resolutions and playing with chord tones.

Theory and technique aside though, Josh had a strong aim with these tracks - to get you playing expressively with relaxed confidence and authority. Allowing you to play ‘in the moment’ and focus on navigating that syncopated groove style with ease.
