In his third and final Outside Concepts Masterclass, John F. Klaver teaches you how to move beyond one-chord vamps and generate more encapsulating melodies through his outside soloing techniques.
Firstly John lays the groundwork with 10 concise exercises, helping you to get the core concepts under your fingers. Using the major scale as your base, you’ll learn how to use altered, octatonic, whole-tone, harmonic minor and pentatonic scales. You’ll then learn how to creatively use techniques such as chromatics, octave jumps, scale sequencing and arpeggio patterns.
Moving forward you’ll have 10 musical phrases to master, with more advanced concepts such as implied chords, tritone substitutions, odd note rhythmic patterns, extended arpeggios, switching positions and a whole host of other interesting melodic and rhythmic concepts to use in your own solos.
Using everything you’ve learned you’ll master a full solo, demonstrating John’s outside concepts in a real-world context and deepening your understanding of how to apply these new techniques to your own solos.
As always, we have included everything you need to practise and perfect the material in this Masterclass. There are video and audio tracks for you to watch/listen and study, accurately transcribed TAB/notation for you to analyse and master, full backing tracks to practice with and a detailed guide taking you step-by-step through the content.
Break free from the conventional, expand your soloing vocabulary and add some creative twists to your own musical stories with this final instalment of the Outside Concepts series.
