Start with A major pentatonic, using those C-C# slides that we practised with Mixolydian pentatonic. The little sliding phrase at the start of bar 3 is Mixolydian pentatonic, but with that Bb note (the b9th) as a chromatic ornament. I then play a full A Mixolydian line with the added b5th “blue note”. Then I outline the notes of D7 (D F# A C) using a little chromatic run to approach the F# note on the 5th string. I use A minor pentatonic (again with the added Bb slide) in bars 8-9, and then the respective Mixolydian pentatonics over E9-D9.
